About Plain Grammar

Plain Grammar is a free guide to English grammar and usage for students, English learners, teachers and anyone who writes for work. It answers the questions people really look up: which of two words to use, where a comma belongs, what a grammar term means. Today it covers 126 sets of commonly confused words, the complete original text of William Strunk Jr.'s The Elements of Style, and a growing reference on punctuation and the parts of speech.

How the pages are written

Every explanation and example sentence is written for this site. We describe standard American usage as the major dictionaries and style guides describe it, and where those guides disagree (the serial comma, "alright", "snuck") we say so instead of inventing a rule. Each page ends with a short check so you can test yourself, and the quizzes are free to use in class.
